Design Inspiration… Kitchens and Bathrooms

The smallest part of a New York City apartment (aside from the closet space) is the kitchen…or the bathroom…or maybe BOTH. I grew up in Manhattan so I am used to a tiny bathroom and a cramped galley kitchen. Luckily I don’t have the mini-oven or mini-fridge like some crawl-space walk-ups do–but my kitchen is still kid-sized–as is my bathroom. There are two good things about small spaces: Less mess and easy make-over. You can change the whole look and feel of a kitchen with a few minor alterations and additions…like chalkboard paint and some new sink accessories and a cutting board from Mjölk.

I spend the better part of my morning poring over images of simple, chic, airey spaces. I have selected a few kitchen images from my fave Design Sponge Sneak Peek section to show how minor details like white shelving stocked with white dinnerware creates a clean look or how a few carefully selected accessories can elevate the room… Think semi-expensive cutting board paired with simple white Ikea mugs or antique flea-market bottles and wine boxes for ingredient storage. Little imaginative touches make all the difference.
